This time of year most of us have our minds on buying gifts, enjoying parties and spending time with our family and friends. But one extra thing you should keep in the back of your mind is that break-ins and theft are more likely during the holidays. Bad news, I know, but don't let it ruin your holiday spirit. Here are a few easy ways to help prevent theft, and put your mind at ease, this holiday season.
#1) Lighten Up. A dark house is like a beacon saying "we're not home!". Seems pretty obvious, but with all of the shopping and running around you are probably doing, it's easy to forget. Set your timers to turn on internal and external lights automatically, and if you are going on vacation, ask a friend or neighbor to get your mail. Also, it's never a bad idea to install a home security system.
#2) Mind Your Car. Be sure to lock your doors EVERY time you leave your car. It's easy to forget this as you are running in and out of stores. Also, once you have your packages and gifts, try to keep them in the trunk until you get home so they are not visible, Also, be sure to park in well-lit areas.
#3) Apartment Vigilance. There are lots of ways in and out of many apartment complexes and buildings, so it's especially important to check do a thorough lock check. That means not just the locks on your front door and windows (and balcony if you have one), but locks to the laundry room or other common areas. If anything is broken, be sure to report it to your apartment management immediately.
#4) Insure your Peace of Mind. Unfortunately, no matter how prepared you are, bad things can still happen. Be sure you are properly insured with the right amount of homeowners/renters and auto insurance. That way, even if the unthinkable occurs, you'll be reimbursed up to your policy limits.
#5) Take Stock. In the event of a claim, it makes things go much more smoothly if you've got a good handle on what you've got. Ideally, you'll have a comprehensive list of all of your valuable (photos are a great help too!). Your Keenan Insurance Agent can help you assess and index your valuables to help you recover in the event of a loss.
These simple steps can make you feel more secure and confident this holiday season!
